FAQs
What is a Virtual Private Network (VPN)?
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is the most popular form of internet security, used to maintain your privacy while surfing the internet. A VPN creates a private tunnel over the public internet, so whether you're at home, on the move, or on a public WiFi network, your connection and data stay safe and private.
A VPN is also useful if you want a local IP in the UK, US, Australia, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, France, Spain, Italy or the Netherlands. With our service, you get a local IP on your desktop, mobile device or router — so it looks to the rest of the world like you're in that country, giving you access to locally restricted content.
Finally, a VPN is perfect if you want a generic IP address rather than one that identifies your location. With StreamVPN, your traffic is located by our servers' geographic IPs, keeping your actual location private. We run 120+ servers to ensure plenty of capacity and no downtime.
What does a VPN connection give me?
- Access to TV and radio catch-up services and other media.
- Watch TV online while abroad.
- Unblock national lotteries and gambling apps.
- A layer of security and privacy.
- Stops your local ISP from throttling your connection.
- Prevents harassment from people tracking you by IP.
- Safe, encrypted connection between your computer and the internet.
- Access blocked sites and bypass proxy and content filters.

What TV channels can I watch?
More and more media is being made available online every day. StreamVPN provides a one-stop directory of dozens of online TV websites. Some services also require a separate subscription.
How can I watch programmes on my TV rather than my PC, Mac or mobile device?
A) Use a cable. Connect your computer to the TV with an HDMI cable.
B) Cast your device. Most smart TVs and streamers let you cast from Windows and Android devices (and from iOS and Mac with a little more setup) — all devices need to be on the same network.
C) VPN router. A VPN router gives every device in your home a local IP via WiFi. Any router that supports OpenVPN works — Sabai Technology, FlashRouters or similar. Once set up, your Smart TV, games console, Roku and Apple TV all benefit from the VPN connection.
D) DD-WRT router. DD-WRT is an open-source firmware that adds business-grade features (including a VPN client) to consumer routers. We support DD-WRT with an OVPN configuration file. This is technical — we recommend buying a pre-installed DD-WRT or Sabai router unless you're comfortable flashing firmware.
E) Amazon Fire TV, Stick and Cube. We have a dedicated app on the Amazon Store. Install it in seconds and plug the Fire Stick into any TV's HDMI port — the easiest and most cost-effective way to watch your home country's TV from anywhere. See installation guides.
F) Roku. Excellent device with its own channel selection. Combined with a VPN router, you get on-line content from over 400 channels — plus great screen-mirror support from any VPN-connected PC.
What is the difference between a paid service like StreamVPN and free services?
Bandwidth isn't free, so free services cover their costs by serving advertisements that get injected into the pages you visit. It can be very invasive to your viewing.
With StreamVPN you pay a monthly subscription but you access any available content ad-free, with no distractions.
Looking for a free VPN? Try StreamVPN risk-free instead — if within 30 days you're not 100% satisfied, you'll get your money back.
